Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) rejects Baffinland’s 2018 request, stating the expansion of the mine would potentially incur “ significant and lasting negative effects on marine mammals and marine environment, fish, caribou and other territorial wildlife, vegetation and fresh water”, and that “ these negative effects could also impact Inuit harvesting, culture, land use and food security”.

2012 – APRIL TO JULY

Isuma collective, through its Digital Indigenous Democracy (DID) project, consults with Inuit interviewing them on video. Using video to consult Inuit, allows people to think and speak their concerns in their own Inuktitut language. Isuma made these videos available on it’s website www.isuma.tv/did to allow Inuit in any community to watch and listen to a wide range of views in a language they understand. DID allowed anyone to respond, comment or upload their own videos. This interactive network of discussion adapted modern media technology to the traditional Inuit value of consensus decision-making. All videos on this channel were filed to the NIRB Public Hearings on Baffinland's Mary River Environmental Impact Statement as part of Zacharias Kunuk's Formal Intervention ‘My Father's Land’ to become part of the permanent formal record of the environmental review.

In 1985, Zacharias Kunuk broke the race barrier at Canada Council for the Arts when his Inuktitut-language video, From Inuk Point of View, was the first work by an Inuit or Aboriginal artist deemed eligible to apply for a professional artist's grant. Kunuk was the video's director and producer; Norman Cohn cameraman; Paul Apak Angilirq editor; and elder Pauloosie Qulitalik as narrator. By 1990, the four partners had formed Igloolik Isuma Productions Inc. to produce independent video art from an Inuit point of view. ISUMA, meaning ‘to think,’ is a collective of Inuit-owned related companies based since 1990 in Igloolik, Nunavut with a southern office in Montreal.

Bernard Saladin d'Anglure films made in Igloolik between 1972 and 1974. His yearly visits to Nunavut allowed him to remain attuned to the people of the North, with whom he discussed topics related to traditional and contemporary Inuit thought. Professor Saladin d'Anglure spoke Inuktitut fluently. To maintain a scientifically valid anthropology and out of respect for Inuit rights, he involved the Inuit in his research and turned over to them the data gathered from them.

Starting in the 1940s, the federal government begins forcing Inuit in the Eastern Arctic to move off the land and relocate into permanent settlements. They are given E-5 numbers (Eskimo Tags), and parents are told they must send their kids to school to learn Qallunnaat ways. At the same time, miners and prospectors spread across the north, looking for precious metals.
